DEXTA'S BIOGRAPHY
Born in 1994, Dexta was bred by Richard Hedges of
Quainton. The sire was the Thoroughbred 'Kings Copy', the grandson of
'Nickel King' (Mary Kings
famous 'King William' eventer also came from
the 'Nickel King' bloodline.) The
Dame was a Cleveland Bay for which I have no information on. The idea
being to produce a foal with the speed of the Thoroughbred and the
temperament and bone of the Cleveland Bay. This would make a good
combination for eventing. However, Dexta didn't quite turn out
that way. He's got the brain and temperament of a Thoroughbred and the
body of his Mother.
Originally owned by Ross Read and Dave Morgan.
They bought him to drive and show in Heavy Horse Shows. The first time I saw
Dexta, was when he was being handled by Ross and came trotting past the
house while I was mowing the front lawn. She stopped for a chat and
for me to see her new acquisition. Dexta was the handsomest animal I
had ever seen. As the summer went by I saw Dex a few more times as he
was being handled along the road. Then one night Ross came to the house and
said her plans had changed and she needed to sell Dexta.
I was working as a Ranger for the Countryside
Service and together we patroled around
Totternhoe, Dunstable Downs and surrounding area until he was 10. I
then, because of health problems, had him broken to harness by the most
interesting elderly gentleman I have ever met Mr Ron
Creasey. The rest as they say is history...and we are
still making it.
